The Front Room Fire 1 & 2 DVD

The Front Room Fire (1) shows the rapid development of a fire in older non fire-retardant furniture, which is still found in many properties.

Front Room Fire 2 records the slower growth of a fire in new furniture and focuses on the contents and accessories found in most modern homes which can also lead to a major fire.

This production highights the changes in legislation, furniture manufacture, fire-fighting techniques, and contents of a typical front room since ’The Front Room Fire’ was filmed over a decade ago.

This old type of polyurethane foam-filled furniture used in the original video is no longer allowed in high street shops following changes to the Furniture Regulations in 1989 and 1990.

The ignition source was a tea-light candle containing two dead matches, located close to the television set. The room was designed to represent a typical modern front room; the sofa and chairs complied with current furniture regulations, and the increased use of electrical equipment was reflected with the inclusion of a video player, a digi-box and a stereo, along with CDs and video tapes. It was important to include CDs and videos as these can significantly increase the fire-load. There were also a number of candles in the room, as they are currently very fashionable.

This fire took 18 minutes to reach the full involvement comparable to 3 minutes in the original video. This confirms how much the furniture regulations have slowed fire development in foam filled furniture. The tube in the television lasted 8.5 minutes before imploding and spreading the fire.

This is a popular training aid used by fire brigades and fire safety trainers. Running time 19m

Your Office Fire DVD (12 mins)

Imagine you knew your job wasn't going to exist in a years time, how would you feel?  Imagine that the reason is a fire in your office, caused by carelessness, and lasting just a few minutes - but leading to the loss of your livelihood.  There is no guarantee a fire is going to happen, but this video can give you a pretty good idea of what it's going to look like if it does.  The fire is shown in real time reaching flashover and about 4 1/2 minutes after ignition.  It involves materials which are typical of many offices. No special effects are used.

By looking at why fires like this happen, it is possible to give advice on how to prevent them.

It Happens Every Day (2003 - 8 mins)

This video, shot in a demonstration office built in the Building Research Establishment fire division's Burn Hall, follows the experiences of two trainees in dealing with re-created but real fire situations.  After demonstrations by an expert, they are taken through the following key steps to enable them to successfully and safely deal with a small fire in an office using a water fire extinguisher and, in the case of electrical fires, a carbon dioxide extinguisher:

  • where to place the extinguisher

  • what to consider with regard to your own safety

  • which extinguisher to use and why

  • how to test and use the extinguisher safely and efficiently

Further guidance is given including raising the alarm and calling the fire brigade,  The proper use of fire extinguishers could help save the UK economy over £500 million and prevent many deaths and injuries.

2 Bonus Videos

This DVD also contains two bonus videos 'Get it Certified' and 'Safeguarding your Business' which highlights some of the work and services provided by the BRE
